This position is located at the Lawton Indian Hospital in Lawton, Oklahoma. The purpose of the position is to serve as a clinical specialist in pediatric dentistry to provide pediatric dental services to the designated population in accordance with Indian Health Service policies. The incumbent will report to the Supervisory Dentist.

Duties

Provides pediatric dental services using local anesthetic, nitrous oxide, sedative medications, protective stabilization, or combinations thereof. Provides routine and complex oral surgery services, tooth extractions and removal of residual root tips in both simple and complex situations. Maintains patient records. Records oral conditions of teeth and surrounding tissues, procedure and diagnostic codes, clinical notes, medical histories, consents, vital signs, and treatment plans. Aids other Dentists in their treatment planning and treatment of more complex dental problems with minor children. Participate in the planning, and be responsible for the coordination, implementation, and evaluation of the Area-wide pediatric dentistry program appropriate to the clinical and prevention needs of the Oklahoma City Area IHS Dental Program.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Education: Applicants must have a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (external link) (ADA) or the Commission on Dental Accreditation (external link) (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Board Dental Examinations (external link) (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (external link) (JCNDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Medical Requirements: Applicants must be able to distinguish shades of color. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Additional Qualification Requirement for Dental Officer, GS-680-13. GS-13: Three (3) years of professional dentistry experience and/or training. This experience must be equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector. Examples include: Treating a range of oral health issues in children; common services are: filling cavities, removing teeth, fixing broken teeth and treating sensitive teeth; administering anesthetics for certain procedures and are able to write prescriptions for antibiotics and pain medications; reviewing x-rays to assist in diagnosing and proper course of treatment; providing comprehensive dental rehabilitation in children 6 and under in clinic and also utilizing operating room facilities; providing parents and patients with a detail summary of the diagnosis and individualized treatment plan/choices; inputting patient demographics into Dentrix software or similar dental practice management software; educating parents and children on proper brushing and flossing techniques; and helping children establish good oral health habits at an early age. OR Completed a 3-year residency program in dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical science, or a related medical science. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
