This position is a summer internship, with the possibility of extension for the duration of time enrolled in an accredited academic institution. Internships may be extended through the school year based on workload requirements and budget availability. This appointment does not confer permanent federal status.

Duties

As an Economist Student Trainee, you will perform a wide variety of analytical duties associated with economics work. Your assignments are designed to encourage professional growth and development, to develop an understanding of agency issues relating to international trade, and to experience a variety of international trade work. You will perform short-and medium-term projects under the direction of higher-graded economists. You will conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis utilizing a variety of software and tools, such as Stata, Python, R, SAS, MS Excel, or other statistical software. You will perform duties related to statistical surveys, such as tabulation and processing of data, routing and posting from secondary sources, and preparation of simple charts, tables, or graphs. You will analyze data and information related to international trade and import injury investigations. You may conduct literature reviews and other targeted research on international trade issues and topics, including summarizing findings through written products. Your technical competencies will advance through the performance of detailed study planning and the collection, compilation, and cleaning of data from secondary sources (e.g. Census, Bureau of Labor Statistics, World Bank, International Monetary Fund and OECD). You will conduct analytical writing, prepare preliminary interpretive reports and use computer applications in economic research. As a Pathways Intern, you may be rotated to other offices or divisions as needed.

Requirements

• You will be required to sign a Pathways Program Participant Agreement.
• You must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.
• Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
• Must be enrolled at least half time at a qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate at least half-time.
• You must maintain status as a current student while on this appointment.
• The intern is in a trial period throughout the entire Pathways Internship appointment.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement: Be enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, on at least a half-time basis, at a qualifying educational institution. Be seeking a diploma, degree, or certificate; AND Be in good academic standing and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 Qualifications: To qualify for the Student Trainee (Economist), your experience must demonstrate attention to detail, customer service, oral communication, problem solving skills, researching data required for reporting purposes, creating data sets, and cleaning raw data. To qualify at the GS-5 level, you must meet the following requirement: Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree., in a related field such as economics and statistic. To qualify at the GS-7 level, you must meet the following requirements: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education in a related field such as economics and statistic; or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree. S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses. Grade-point average (G.P.A.) -- Applicants must have a grade-point average of: 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society -- Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies. These honor societies are listed by the Association of College Honor Societies. This position has an education requirement. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted in the application package. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Pathways Student Internship Program Education Requirement:1. Must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in an accredited college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate on a full or half-time basis.
NOTE: You MUST provide proof that you are currently enrolled or have been accepted for enrollment in the next academic term on a full-time or part-time basis.

A. You must maintain student eligibility and enrollment for the duration of the internship. If you do not maintain eligibility and enrollment, you are ineligible for this program.

B. Every semester, you must maintain good academic standing with an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

C. Must be a citizen of the U.S. (or lawfully admitted to the U.S. as a permanent resident or otherwise authorized to be employed under Immigration law, and able to be employed under the appropriations ban on employment of non-citizens).
