Duties

Managing the Seeds of Success Program for BLM and Tribal partnerships including native seed scouting, mapping, collections, data, and plant materials management. Assisting in implementation of restoration including site preparation, planting native species, and project monitoring and reporting. Assist in developing restoration plans for areas disturbed by fire, invasive species, and human activities. Provide professional botanical expertise in protection, management, and improvement of habitat for native species and wildlife within framework of multiple-use management of woodlands, rangelands, and coastal areas. Correlate vegetation management with other resource uses (e.g. forestry, recreation, cultural, wildlife and fisheries) and implement habitat management programs with emphasis on maintaining and enhancing biodiversity. Identify data gaps, species status, species habitat, sensitive resources, invasive species populations, etc. for the team. Prepare or review biological evaluations for threatened, endangered or sensitive species. Assist other team members with field tasks such as they arise. Apply non-native invasive species treatment techniques within BLM-managed lands and across jurisdictions as they arise. Work with local ranchers to provide support for infrastructure as well as rangeland health monitoring and evaluations. Prepare project work plans and coordinate project work with other unit personnel considering pollinator habitat requirements in relation to other multiple-use management of rangelands and coastal lands activities. Coordinate with project partners on restoration activities: scheduling for projects, detailing specific tools and protocols in areas where sensitive plants and habitat exist to accomplish recovery actions for special status plant species. Data management including entering data into appropriate databases such as the Seeds of Success portal, California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB), Vegetation Mapping Action Portal (VMAP). Use of Arc GIS Online (AGOL) and associated applications such as Collector, Survey 123 and, Field Maps.

Qualifications

Basic Education Requirement You must possess a degree in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least: 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. In addition to the basic education requirement, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. To qualify for the GS-9: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level. Examples of specialized experience may include experience conducting plant and wildlife surveys, habitat restoration, revegetation/restoration planning, plant community/association mapping, assisting with permit preparation, and assisting with contract administration. Reviewing, researching, and analyzing biological data, issues, and information that support project recommendations. Utilizing systems such as ArcGIS and GPS field data collection systems. Assistance with wildfire restoration projects. OR 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. OR A combination of education and experience. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. This is a term appointment not to exceed 13 Months. Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration of more than 1 year, but not more than 4 years and are subject to a 1 year probationary or two year trial period. Should the need warrant, term appointments may be extended without further competition up to a maximum of the 4 year limitation. The appointment to a term position does not confer eligibility for promotion, reassignment, or transfer to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment. Physical Demands: Field work takes place in a variety of forest terrain including rugged, rough, or slick terrain. Climates range from cool and wet to hot and dry. Incumbent must be in good physical condition. Office duties are sedentary. Work Environment: Considerable outdoor activity is required to complete project work. May work in isolated or back country areas, high altitudes, alone or with a team, extreme weather conditions, and hazardous terrain.
