About the Position: This position is located in the Pathology Department at the Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA.

Duties
Draw blood samples on adults, children and infants to include newborns.
Select appropriate venipuncture site and cleans to ensure contamination-free field, taking into account any adverse reaction to cleaning solutions if indicated by patient or doctor.
Accurately separate specimen tubes in section holding bins during workday for sections to retrieve on a timely basis.
Greet and screen patients at the laboratory reception desk, securing sufficient information to determine need, eligibility for care and priority for testing.
Receive patient specimens directly from approximately 40 requesting locations (in-patient, out-patient, outlying clinics and remote sites) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Responsible for properly processing, ordering, packaging, and shipping several different types of clinical specimens submitted for testing.
Serve as initial MEDCEN to onboard and utilize the new EHRS MHS Genesis.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis
- This position may include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays). This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
- This position may require rotating shifts (i.e. work schedule that requires employees to continuously rotate from one shift to another at predetermined intervals).
- The incumbent will be required to report to work during times of contingency operations, natural disasters, extreme weather or other emergency situations.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. General and/or Specialized Experience: Six months of general experience (1) in any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with laboratory tests and support AND six months of specialized experience which includes performing tests, procedures, and related support work such as shipping specimens and calibrating laboratory instruments. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).

Education and Training: Successful completion of (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; OR (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of a full-time training course of approximately a year's duration in a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) school that included instruction in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology (including serology) and that, in addition, included supervised laboratory practice incident to the diagnostic process and the treatment of patients; OR (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentage.
