This position is in support of the Military Commissions Defense Organization (MCDO), which is responsible for providing defense legal services to detainees being tried in military commissions. The incumbent serves as an Investigator on a MCDO defense team and requires expertise on a broad range of investigate duties. This position is located in the National Capital Region with periodic travel to Naval Station Guantanamo Bay (NSGB) and other CONUS and OCONUS locations.

Duties

Incumbent typical work assignments may include the following: Develops and administers investigative plans in defending the assigned cases through the pre-trial, trial and penalty phases in conjunction with the supervisory investigator and defense team attorneys. Plans, organizes, and conducts difficult and complex investigations relevant to all phases of the defense case. Coordinates with law enforcement agencies, military departments and the prosecution to review government seized, collected or produced evidence. Locates and interviews witnesses and law enforcement personnel. Presents investigative findings related to all cases both orally and in writing as directed by defense attorneys.

  • This position may require you to obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET Clearance with access to Special Compartmentalized Information (TS/SCI)
  • This position may require occasional travel away from the normal duty station via military or commercial aircraft
  • This position may require you to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays and/or mandatory overtime

Read more about what should I include in my federal resume? at https://www.usajobs.gov/Help/faq/application/documents/resume/what-to-include/ You may qualify at the GS-12 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrates: Assisting with interviewing witnesses to prepare for criminal defense cases; Researching records to prepare reports; and Assisting with developing mitigation evidence to present at trial. You may qualify at the GS-13 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrates: Conducting analysis of criminal defense cases to determine the appropriate investigative process; Interviewing witnesses to prepare written statements; and Preparing reports for various criminal defense cases. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. All qualifications requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement and clearly documented in your resume.
