The position is assigned to the Mason shop, a department of the Carpentry shop, within the Maintenance Division of the Facilities Management service at the Minneapolis VA Healthcare System. The Mason performs the necessary tile, brick, stone and concrete work for remodeling or repair throughout the Medical Center campus.
Duties
Major duties listed but not limited to:
Creates or replaces expansion joints and edges using forms, edging tools, jointers, and straightedges
Constructs steel reinforced support pads for building equipment
Installs ceramic tilework throughout, including the floor, taking care to create proper slope in floor for drainage and ensuring it is watertight
Creates window and doorway openings in concrete masonry unit (CMU) walls
Installs window sills and door jambs, along with lintels used to support the weight of the wall above the openings
Constructs and repairs retaining walls
Preps surfaces and installs vinyl coated floor tile, solid sheet vinyl flooring or other substrates
Installs new or replaces existing carpeting, using the proper tools and adhesives
Coordinates with the Interior Designers for color and material selection
Repairs existing manholes and catch basins, adjusting for proper height and slope to drai
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (work hours may be further discussed during the interview)

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. For this position, you must have the ability to do the work of a Mason without more than normal supervision in performing the full range of duties. Related experience includes but is not limited to: performs brickwork such as bricklaying, tuck pointing, sealing, waterproofing, caulking and mortar mixing to maintain and repair existing brickwork; utilizes various masonry tools (ex. bricklayers rule, brick sets, trowels, screeds, power tools, etc.); works from blueprints, rough sketches or written work orders to perform installation, maintenance, alteration and construction associated with the masonry trade; and determines materials and proper tools to be used for projects.

Working Conditions: Masons work indoors in air conditioned spaces and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Some outdoor projects may require work near moving vehicles and exposure to the possibility of falls while working on scaffolds or ladders. Masons are subject to high noise levels from operating power tools, or other hazards such as airborne dust, cuts, bruises and irritation of eyes and skin from exposure to chemicals. The use of protective gear such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, and gloves is required.
