Duties

Responsible for all duties and functions related to case work activities for sentenced adults and adjudicated juveniles housed in non-federal facilities as boarders; provides technical assistance, mid-level direction, and training to institutions and Community Corrections staff within the Region; monitors population levels among institutions; and, shares responsibility for the overall mission of the Regional Correctional Programs Department. As a member of the Correctional Programs Department, maintains a working knowledge of many correctional program policies, reviews institutional supplements, and is able to provide interpretation, assistance and advice to Regional and institution staff on application and interpretation of these polices. Reviews and responds timely to correspondence, Congressional Inquiries and Administrative Remedies initiated by inmates usually confined in state or federal facilities in the Region; requiring knowledge of Bureau policy and procedures, contact with staff in the various institutions, and awareness/sensitivity to the behavior and usual concerns of inmates in confinement.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements: Education: There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for this position. Experience: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is directly related experience that included substantial involvement with a correctional program and provided a thorough knowledge of correctional techniques, or experience in meeting and dealing with people that demonstrated the ability to work effectively with inmates and associates in a correctional environment. Experience must have also demonstrated the ability to perform supervisory or administrative duties successfully. This includes (1) understanding the problems of custody, treatment, training, and release of inmates of penal or correctional institutions; (2) a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of an institution's internal policies, programs, regulations, and procedures; and (3) training subordinates, coordinating and directing activities and functions, evaluating performance of operations and the effectiveness of programs, and maintaining high standards or work objectives. This experience must have been gained in an administrative position, or in other positions that included the successful direction, or assistance in the direction of, an entire correctional program or a major phase of such a program. Some examples of this qualifying experience are: Experience in developing policy, providing expert advice in an area of correctional specialty, or to provide guidance, direction, supervision, advice and/or evaluation for a program(s) in correctional facilities. Experience working with and having a comprehensive knowledge of BOP policies and procedures, especially those related to the Correctional Programs discipline, Freedom of Information/Privacy Acts, Federal Statues and contractual agreements. Experience as a law enforcement officer in a correctional facility with primary responsibility for the detention, direction, supervision, inspection, training employment, care and transportation of inmates incarcerated. If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience.
