Duties

Engineering Analysis Perform conventional and routine engineering analyses associated with segments of engineering assignments or projects of broader scope to include technical planning activities Modeling and data analyses, analyses of site location and/or conditions Troubleshooting electrical equipment and systems Make engineering recommendations or draw conclusions based on engineering analysis Prepare or evaluate conventional and routine engineering designs and/or participate, in a developmental capacity, in engineering design studies and projects Documentation and Presentation Draft technical documentation for conventional or routine engineering assignments or for assigned portions of broader projects Make internal presentations of technical documentation Prepare routine engineering documentation and participate in investigations and in the planning process Investigations, Assessments, and/or Inspections Participate in engineering facility examinations, reviews, and/or inspections which include conventional and routine tasks associated with conducting condition assessments and construction and transfer inspections Identify deficiencies relative to design criteria, applicable codes and standards, or state or federal statutes or regulations Calculate preliminary estimates for repairs Identify future needs for the asset investment such as extraordinary maintenance and rehabilitation

Qualifications

To be eligible for consideration, you must first meet the Basic Education Requirement for this position. Basic Qualification Requirements A. Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in Engineering in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). OR B. Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a Bachelor's or higher degree in Engineering that included differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five (5) of the following seven (7) areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. OR C. Completed 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences, and that included the courses specified in B above. These courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program. OR D. Successfully completed a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field such as engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology AND have at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. This must include either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions. OR E. Successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico. Note: You must submit documentation of having passed the examination. OR F. Currently registered as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. This registration must have been obtained by written test OR be in general engineering or a directly related engineering field and was gained by State grandfather or eminence provisions NOTE: You must submit copies of your current registration. AND In order to be rated as qualified for this position, the HR Office must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience and/or education requirement - this information must be clearly supported in the resume. To be considered for the GS-7 level: In addition to meeting basic requirements for engineering positions, you must have one (1) full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to at the GS-05 grade in the Federal service, performing one of the following duties: 1. Assists with engineering analyses assignments; 2. Assists with engineering studies or evaluations; 3. Utilizing engineering data collection systems. OR Have one year of graduate-level education or Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) by meeting one of the following: a grade point average (GPA) 3.0 or higher in all degree courses or in the final 2 years of undergraduate study or a graduating GPA of 3.5 or higher based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final two years of the curriculum; OR membership in a National honor society recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies. OR C. Have one year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education in engineering or a closely related field that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully complete the work of the position. OR D. Have a combination of specialized experience as described in "A" and graduate level education as described in "C" that, when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement. OR E. Have successfully completed a 5-year program of study of at least 160 semester hours leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution. OR F. Have an engineering bachelor's degree and have appropriate specialized experience as an Engineering Technician equivalent to grade GS-5 or higher. To be considered for the GS-9 level: In addition to meeting basic requirements for engineering positions, you must have one (1) full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to at the GS-07 grade in the Federal service, performing two of the following duties: 1. Assists with engineering analyses assignments; 2. Assists with engineering studies or evaluations; 3. Utilizing engineering data collection systems; 4. Engineering data collection. OR B. Have successfully completed 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree or master's degree or higher in engineering or a closely related field that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully complete the work of the position. OR C. Have a combination of specialized experience as described in "A" and graduate level education as described in "C" that, when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement. OR D. Have successfully completed a bachelor's degree in engineering with SAA and have one year of professional engineering experience. Professional engineering experience is defined as non-routine engineering work that required professional knowledge of engineering; professional ability to apply such knowledge to engineering problems; and positive and continuing development of professional knowledge and ability. OR E. Have completed a 5-year program of study of at least 160 semester hours leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering and have one year of professional engineering experience. Professional engineering experience is defined as non-routine engineering work that required professional knowledge of engineering; professional ability to apply such knowledge to engineering problems; and positive and continuing development of professional knowledge and ability. The superior academic achievement provision is to be used to determine eligibility for applicable GS-07 level positions of persons who have completed (or expect to complete within 9 months) all the requirements for bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a qualifying grade point average (GPA), class standing, or honors society. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. The applicant will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. A period of student trainee work experience is equal to 320 hours of work experience. Academic Year: At the undergraduate level, 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours is comparable to 1 year of undergraduate education. Four years of progressive study or 120 semester hours meets the degree requirements. At the graduate level, 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours.

Education

Accreditation: Only education from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education is acceptable to meet education requirements or to substitute for experience, if applicable. Foreign Education: To receive credit for education completed outside the United States, you must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs.
