You will serve as a Shop Material Controller in the Research and Development Services Division Research and Development Services Division of NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY.

Duties

You will check materials on work orders and/or materials lists. You will make inside purchases and prepare procurement forms for outside purchases, and telephone vendors for supply prices and availability. You will use supply part manuals and catalogs of materials needed in accordance with specifications and inform planners and estimators when materials are not available and suggest a suitable substitute. You will check with multiple companies to obtain better prices. You will write small contracts for specialized work and contract out small jobs that the shop manpower cannot accomplish because of time oriented requirements. You will prepare detailed and complete lists of material procurement orders from job specifications plans, sketches, and related sources.

Requirements

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

  • Work requires lifting and moving items weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Work requires exposure to dangers inherent as applicable to the building and construction trade approximately 30% of the time.
  • Work is outdoors and indoors under all weather conditions and he/she is subjected to many uncomfortable conditions such as temperature extremes, smoke, dust, dirt, noise, and etc.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • Selectee must be able to operate material moving equipment inside warehouse and fork lifts.
  • Must obtain and maintain requirements for a Government Commercial Purchase Card.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION performing common tasks including initiating requests for material and equipment procurement and ensuring that delivery of material and equipment is coordinated with the established work schedule; reviewing work orders to determine materials needed for maintenance and repair work, and ensuring that deliveries of materials are on time for scheduled work; reviewing work orders, related instructions, blueprints, and sketches to complete assigned tasks; and, determining material availability. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
