The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic position is under the Operations Section of Facilities Management Service at the Atlanta VA Healthcare System. Incumbent installs, troubleshoots, and makes repairs on various refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems such as walk-in coolers, refrigerators, ice machines, freezers, evaporating fans, window air conditioning units and similar equipment.

Duties

Major Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Installs, troubleshoots, and makes repairs on various refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems such as walk-in coolers, refrigerators, ice machines, freezers, evaporating fans, window air conditioning · units and similar equipment. Assists higher graded mechanics on larger or more complex systems or equipment. Maintenance and repair of HVAC systems and all components, refrigerators, ice machines, walk in boxes, freezers, fan coil units, and pumps throughout the facility. The work includes both repair and preventive maintenance. Uses materials called for in work orders and schematic drawings, or obtains replacement parts, such as switches, controls, expansion valves, hot/cold water valves, VAV's, pumps, and thermostats. Routine repair and maintenance duties are accomplished independently; if unusual problems arise, or if installation or repair of unfamiliar or complex industrial HVAC systems is assigned, a supervisor or higher-grade worker provides advice and checks to see that completed work meets requirements. Maintains a level of communication with the supervisor or other shop personnel keeping the supervisory or higher-level employee informed concerning project status, materials and tools-needed to complete an assigned task/project. Hours may change due to Agency need Position Description Title/PD#: Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic/PD078030 Physical Requirements: The work requires carrying of equipment, tools, and testing devices that seldom weigh over 50 lbs. Most of the equipment can be reached from the floor or from ladders. Occasionally, platforms and scaffolding are needed to reach parts of the systems such as fans, electrical and water lines and duct work. The incumbent is required to stop, stretch, bend, kneel and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions; and make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Working Conditions: Most of the work is usually performed inside, but the incumbent is frequently subject to sudden temperature changes when working on equipment such as walk in freezer units. He/She is occasionally subject to cuts, burns, electrical shocks, and respiratory ailments; and exposed to repeated, prolonged or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases that may cause toxic effects on eyes, skin, and internal organs.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EPA CERTIFICATION: In accordance with 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F, EPA, people working in this type of position must have and maintain proper EPA Certifications for working with refrigerants. You must have these EPA Certification Types I, II and III in order to meet the requirements of this position. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
