The John D. Dingell Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) is seeking a transformative and visionary leader for an Associate Chief of Staff for Radiology Service (ACOS Radiology), reporting directly to the Deputy Chief of Staff. In addition to general Radiology, subspecialties aligned under the Radiology Service include Computed Tomography Scanning, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Ultra Sound, Interventional Radiology, Bone Density, Nuclear Medicine, Cardiac Imaging, and certain vascular procedures in the Operating Room. Applicants must be US citizens, have an M.D. or D.O. degree, possess American Board Certification in Radiology, have demonstrated administrative and leadership experience (ideally as Service Chief or Department Chair), and possess the necessary research and educational accomplishments to qualify for an academic appointment at our physically adjacent affiliate, Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSU-SOM).
The candidate should be an inspiring and effective role model, innovative thinker, customer-service focused, and have proven clinical excellence, with exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. The ability to motivate, develop, and monitor medical staff as part of multidisciplinary teams to achieve quality outcomes, optimize clinic capacity and utilization of resources, and maximize operating room efficiency to meet required performance measures is essential. Although the role is predominantly administrative, the ACOS Radiology will also be expected to practice within their specialty, foster a supportive teaching environment, and assist in the development of research programs. The VAMC serves as a major WSU-SOM site for pre-and post-graduate education in medicine, surgery, and psychiatry. A growing basic and clinical research program now exceeds $8 million in total annual funding.
The ACOS Radiologist will be working with a great team of radiologists and technologists, support staff, and will enjoy the following new, top-of-the-line, medical imaging systems being installed currently at the Detroit VA: a 3T PET-MRI, a 3T wide-bore MRI, a dual source multidetector CT, XR systems, 2 Fluoroscopy systems, and an Angiography suite.
This VAMC is a state-of-the-art 108 bed tertiary care medical, surgical, and psychiatric facility with an 84 bed nursing home care unit, a 50 bed off-site Domiciliary, and three community-based outpatient clinics. Over 2,400 employees provide dedicated service to Veterans from throughout southeastern Michigan. We are located in the heart of Detroit's cultural and medical center that includes museums, seven hospitals, and Wayne State University.
Detroit is an active and developing urban area, where a significant amount of gentrification and cultural re-birth have occurred over the past decade. The Medical Center is located directly next to the academic affiliate (Wayne State University) in the center of Detroit's Cultural District (in Mid-town Detroit). The Medical Center is walking distance to the Science Center, Museum of African American History and the Detroit Institute of Art. A new public transportation system in the city of Detroit currently picks up passengers one block from the Medical Center, and commutes to the rest of Detroit's main attractions within a 10 minute train ride, from dining to attractions like the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the four professional sports team stadiums (Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, Detroit Pistons and Detroit Red Wings).
