This Lead Pharmacy Technician position is in Pharmacy services at the Providence VA Medical Center, located at the Providence, RI location. This position is a full-time at 40 hours per week.

Duties

Pharmacy technicians prepare medications by counting, pouring, weighing, measuring, and mixing or compounding oral and intravenous medications. The pharmacy technician may also prepare medications for distribution to inpatient wards and clinics and outpatients for pickup and mailing. The pharmacy technician works in collaboration with other pharmacy technicians and responds to requests of pharmacists and other pharmacy supervisory staff. Duties include but not limited to: Prepare work schedules and assign tasks to ensure timely completion of duties. Ensure pharmacy resources are in optimal working condition and address workflow needs. Provide guidance and support of the work unit in supervisory absence. Train personnel (including students) in methods, procedures and use of equipment and instruments specific to the assigned area. Provide input to supervisor on performance and training needs of employees. Adjust work assignments due to absences, emergencies or changes in priorities. Resolve simple informal complaints of employees and patients, refer more difficult problems to the supervisor. Recommend approval and/or disapproval of leave requests. In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held. This position is a LIUNA Bargaining Unit position. This position is covered by a special rate. Narrative responses to the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) may be required from the selectee in order to proceed with the appointment. This position is in the Excepted Service.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Experience. None required. For all grade levels and positions that accept both education and experience to qualify, equivalent combinations of qualifying education and experience that total at least 100% are qualifying. The combined percentage is determined by adding total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level to the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Certification. For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). OR National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determination GS-08: Experience. Candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) and demonstrate the KSAs below: Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.) Note: See Specialized Area.in the Definitions Section. Skill in training and orienting new and existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures. Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy. Preferred Experience: Previous Lead Pharmacy Technician experience. References: VA HANDBOOK 5005/159 PART II APPENDIX G28 Physical Requirements: The incumbent requires adequate manual dexterity and fine motor coordination to utilize some of the instrumentation. The technician will move from a sitting/standing position several times during the day. Bending is occasionally required to access medication or pharmacy equipment. This position requires regular walking, sitting, standing and occasionally handling (lifting and carrying supply boxes, medication totes, etc.) of varying weights (could be up to 50lbs) throughout most of the workday. This is not a sedentary position.
