About the Position: Serve as a specimen processing technician and phlebotomist for the Clinical Pathology Service, which services Ireland Army Health Clinic located at Fort Knox, KY.

Duties
Perform blood collection procedures by venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques.
Obtain capillary blood samples as required.
Receive samples and specimens of tissue, blood, urine, stool, sputum, and other body fluids.
Sort specimens based on testing location, needs, and priority for turnaround time.
Ensure timely distribution to laboratory sections of all Specimens received.
Serve as a laboratory receptionist in greeting patients, providing them with appropriate guidance, answering non-technical inquiries, and
referring technical inquiries to the appropriate laboratory staff.
Provide phlebotomy training for new laboratory employees, as well as other clinic staff on venipuncture/capillary puncture.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless
otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
- Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R (Condition of Employment for Certain Positions Identified as Critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program) and must pass a urinalysis test as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
- Incumbent must participate in and complete the required specimen collection training IAW established published clinical procedures.
- Maintain all required immunizations to include the monitoring of Tuberculosis as required by established guidelines unless otherwise exempted by a physician.
- All personnel with duties involved with patient care will obtain and maintain Basic Life Support certification.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes knowledge in collecting and preparing various bodily fluid specimens for laboratory testing using phlebotomy procedures such as the Vacutainer collection system, safety needles and butterfly needle devices, syringes and capillary puncture techniques, and collection using microtainers; and performing a variety of support work such as receiving, checking, preparing, and shipping specimens and logging patient and test data into a computer.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
