Duties

If selected for this position as a Paralegal Specialist in the Civil Division of the United States Attorney's Office, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing pre-trial and courtroom support for civil trials. Typical work assignments will include: Reviewing correspondence, pleadings, and briefs to identify and analyze legal and factual issues, and performing the legal research required for response. Reviews documents and other evidence, maintains inventory of materials; and prepares outline of substance of documents/materials. Assisting in discovery and preparing necessary documents in preparation for court hearings and anticipated trials. Compiling and maintaining witness files, including the names, addresses and home, work and other telephone numbers, and the types of documents/services requested provided for trials hearings. Assisting attorneys in pretrial hearings, motion hearings and any evidentiary hearings cases. Assists attorneys in pretrial hearings, motion hearings and any evidentiary hearings in preparation for depositions or trial. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

Qualifications

GS-9: To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education, OR a Combination of Education and Experience. Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing paralegal or legal work which demonstrates a basic knowledge of legal research and the ability to interpret legal decisions. I have at least one year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in Federal service performing paralegal or legal work which demonstrates a basic knowledge of legal research and ability to interpret legal decisions. My qualifying experience involved assisting assigned Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSAs) handling all manner of civil litigation, including defensive, post-conviction, and Touhy matters. Of particular note, the selected candidate will likely be primarily, if not solely, responsible for assisting all AUSAs and Special Assistant, U.S. Attorneys handling sex offender cases, including preparing, scheduling, reviewing, and organizing discovery; assisting with and managing experts and witnesses; tracking deadlines; preparing contracts; assisting with filings; assisting with preparation for and conduct of trials; coordinating with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the Federal Public Defender's Office, and the United States District Court; and conducting legal research and drafting pleadings and other materials as appropriate. OR Education: One of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law): a Master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B. or J.D.); OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. OR Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
