You will serve as a Fire Protection Inspector in the Fire and Emergency Service Division of NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY NORFOLK NSY.

Duties

You will review fire prevention program inspections to verify inspections are completed. You will inspect new construction for inclusion of fire prevention materials or equipment. You will develop and conduct training courses for military personnel, dependents, home care providers, civilian employees, and contractors on fire safety practices and procedures. You will identify hazardous conditions or practices to determine appropriate corrective action.

  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver's license.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.

Qualifications

For GS-08: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing the following duties: 1) Inspects building and facilities to identify fire hazards and implement corrective actions; 2) Identifies hazardous conditions or practices, evaluates degree of hazard involved, and determines appropriate action to be taken; 3) Develops and conducts training course on fire safety practices and procedures (i.e. fixed and portable fire protection equipment, station fire prevention regulations, special hazardous operations/conditions, home and/or work practices, etc.) for military and civilian employees, contractors, and dependents; 4) Provides guidance to supervisors, employees, and the general populace on fire safety and fire protection. NOTE: This experience must be fully supported in your resume to be considered for this position. ***CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR GS-08*** For the GS-08: This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications for the GS-08: HAZMAT Awareness, Fire Inspector I/II, Fire Instructor I, and Public Fire and Life Safety Educator. These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement. If you do not possess all of the above certifications and you have not attached copies of your certifications, you will be rated ineligible. For GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-06 or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing the following duties: 1) Inspects buildings and facilities to identify fire hazards; 2) Recommends corrective actions to eliminate fire and safety hazards; 3) Provides public education on fire safety (i.e. conducts fires drills, conducts classes and demonstrations, develops Fire Prevention Week activities, etc.). NOTE: This experience must be fully supported in your resume to be considered for this position. ***CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR GS-07*** If selected for the GS-07 you will have one year from date of appointment to obtain these certifications: HAZMAT Awareness, Fire Inspector I. These certifications must be awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement.
