The primary purpose of this position, SHEET METAL MECHANIC LEADER, WL-3806-10, is to lead three or more workers to accomplish trade and/or labor work on a substantially full-time and continuing basis. The leader is responsible to perform the work assigned by a supervisor and ensure that subordinates complete assigned work consistent with trades and labor standards.
Duties
1. Lead a team of trades and/or labor workers.
2. Perform nonsupervisory trades and/or labor work that is usually of the same kind and level as members of the work crew led.
3. Examine aircraft sheet metal structures for cracks, breaks, holes, bulges, dents, and loose or missing rivets.
4. Use and maintains tools.
5. Utilize safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulation and maintain a safe and clean work environment.

- PHYSICAL: THIS POSITION REQUIRES A PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL.
- The work will require the employee to drive a government motor vehicle. An appropriate government driver license will be required for the position. Have or obtain and maintain a valid State Driver’s License.
- May be required to train and/or guide lower graded employees.
- Exposure to toxic paints, chemicals or other hazards may require occupational health examinations.
- May be required to assist other workers in various shifts.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WL-3800 - Metal Work Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Knowledge of Equipment, Structure, Materials, etc. (includes constructing repair, and forging).
Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading)
Layout and Pattern Development (includes Geometric Projection and Triangulation)
Ability to Use Hand Tools, Power Tools, etc., for Metal Work
Dexterity (Assembly Disassembly Reassembly etc)
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work encompasses strenuous physical exertion when bending and shaping the more complex items in handling larger and bulkier items. Physical exertion is moderate and includes prolonged standing; climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding; working in cramped and awkward position while installing items; and reaching, lifting, and bending while using hand and powered tools. Weight lifted seldom exceeds 50 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works both inside and outside and is subjected to a moderate amount of noise and vibration from shop machines and to a variety of weather conditions. Subject to cuts, bruises, falls and burns. Required to wear safety glasses when performing eye hazardous operations.
