This position supervises the personnel of the Automatic Transport System (ATS) unit within the Maintenance Division of the Facilities Management service line at the Minneapolis VA Healthcare System.
Duties
Major duties listed but not limited to:
Assigns proper subordinates to tasks to complete maintenance and operations projects in an efficient and effect manner
Inspects jobs in progress to ensure optimum quantity and quality
Plans weekly schedule of employees by prioritizing operations and assignments
Determines the number/types of employees needed to accomplish a specific task or project
Participates in annual budget preparation
Recommends short-range, organizational, and operational improvements
Provides instruction on difficult work operations and alters work assignments as necessary to reduce or control costs and to accomplish the work of the unit as efficiently and effectively as possible
Responsible for general administrative and supervisory personnel functions of his/her unit
Implements corrective actions within his/her authority to resolve work problems
Performs annual/midterm performance evaluations
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (work hours may be further discussed during the interview)

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The ability to lead or provide first level supervision is prime as the General Equipment Mechanic Supervisor while performing the full range of duties. Related experience includes but not limited to: plans, schedules and determines deadlines for work assignments for subordinates; prepares cost estimates for various materials and equipment needed for construction and maintenance projects; operates, maintains and repairs various systems such as the automatic transport system, trash and linen conveying system, fire alarms, security and panic alarm systems, etc.; and performs supervisory responsibilities such as conducting performance evaluations, determining training needs, establishing performance standards, counseling employees, etc.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Working Conditions: May work from ladders, scaffolding, and/or hydraulic platforms. Position requires working in uncontrolled environments, in inclement weather conditions, and in confined or uncomfortable spaces. Many work sites are hot, dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and with unpleasant odors. Occasionally subject to possible dangerous working conditions including exposure to hazards normally encountered in the hospital trades and various types of infections. May be subject to electrical shock and/or electrical burns, cuts, bruises, and strains. Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner.
