This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the scientific and technical expert within Tech Transfer and Commercialization (T2C) to evaluate, assist, and/or coordinate S&T life sciences research activities in the biological, chemical and environmental research areas. Non-BU: This is a non-bargaining unit position.

Duties

As a Biological Scientist, GS-0401-14, your typical work assignments may include: Promoting the Department's transfer of life sciences technology with industry, state and local governments, academia, and other federal agencies. Serving as the Tech Transfer and Commercialization (T2C) Branch's scientific and technical expert to evaluate work done within the Office of National Laboratories system and through extramural performers. Supporting and managing the operations of the DHS Innovation Hub ("HSWERX") and supports the T2C Homeland Startup Studio and Commercialization Accelerator Programs, the Office of Industry Partnerships, and the S&T Business Process Flow R&D lifecycle by providing technical input on the scientific, technical and commercialization merit of funding proposals. Qualifications

Basic requirements for the GS-0401 General Natural Resources Management and Biological Sciences Series: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. or Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Specialized Experience: You qualify for the GS-14 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal government, performing duties such as: Evaluating, assisting, and/or coordinating life sciences research activities in the biological, chemical and environmental research areas including, but not limited to, (i) microbial pathogens; (ii) emergency and diagnostic medical services; (iii) chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear countermeasures, or detection; (iv) animal and plant health and diagnostics; (v) food safety; and (vi) water and wastewater operations, to affect the transfer of research results. Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience may not be used for this grade level. All qualifications and eligibility requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
