Duties

Establishes Region manuals and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) focused on the effective management of the Commanders/Director Safety and Occupational Health (SOH) program related to Industrial Hygienist (IH) program. Reviews plans, programs, safety system designs and implementation procedures for operations within a Region as well as co-located DLA activities. Coordinates and synchronizes efforts related to Agency IH program management elements with DLA MSCs and local IH (i.e. U.S. Army Public Health Center, U.S. Air Force Bioenvironmental, and U.S Navy BUMED). Serves as the technical IH advisor to Region Commander, SOH manager, specialists, leaders, and supervisors. Analyzes and resolve diverse, high-risk hazards, including industrial maintenance operations, warehouse, distribution operations, chemical hazards, and related hazardous materials. Serves as Region Industrial Hygienist, with full responsibility for planning, directing, and operating the Region Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System – Industrial Hygiene (DOERHS-IH) Program Office. Coordinates with SOH staff, performs analysis of region employee exposures, occupational medical surveillance programs, and adverse trends Coordinates with the SOH staff prepares comprehensive investigative reports describing the findings of the investigation, to include recommendations for corrective actions to prevent recurrence of similar incidents.

Qualifications

To qualify for an Industrial Hygienist your resume and supporting documentation must support: A. Basic Requirements - A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or a bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (external link) (ABIH). Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. Education must be from a college or university accredited by an organization approved by the U.S. Department of Education. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To qualify at the GS-12 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes: Serves as a regional technical authority and advisor to management on Industrial Hygiene (IH) issues. Performs analysis of employee exposures, occupational medical surveillance programs, and adverse trends. Assists in developing local IH policies and SOPs. Participates in safety & occupational health mishap investigations. Performs or analyzes physical inspections, IH sampling, and administrative audits. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours that your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
