Duties

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING DAY TO DAY As a Health Communications Specialist, you will use your knowledge of and experience to optimize business results and customer experience by: Ensures that all health communication activities are based on theory and uses accepted principles, methods, and practices. Activities will include under the direction of communications staff, will use results to develop and/or test strategies and messages for different audiences; and will participate in the development, coordination, and maintenance of internal partnerships. Employee is involved as a team member with other communications staff in the development, testing, and timely dissemination of science- and program-based products, tools, and messages to different audiences (i.e., general public, external organizations, partners, and media) in a variety of formats (i.e., print, video, Web). Under the guidance of senior staff, employee may prepare documents and presentations for senior staff to serve as a liaison between agency and other SAMHSA communication and marketing staff on agency-wide issues and networks with a variety of external stakeholders (e.g., health officials in federal, state, and local agencies, communication experts, and representatives of the general public). Assisting in the development and writing of reports and presentations to convey the results of research and programmatic activities to appropriate stakeholders in formal and informal presentations and documents and obtaining appropriate clearance for publications. ** Duties as shown are developmental in nature. Position is being filled below the full performance level (GS-13).

Qualifications

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR Minimum Qualifications: You must have one-year specialized experience to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service performing ALL of the following: Assisting in developing informational and educational public health information; AND Assisting in responding to inquiries and/or presenting information to a variety of groups or representatives. -OR- Have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., that is related to the position. (You must submit supporting transcripts) -OR- Have a combination of experience and education for this grade level that meets 100% of the requirement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through national Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to gain employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. If such experience is on a part-time basis, you must provide the average number of hours worked per week as well as the beginning and ending dates of the experience so it can be fully credited.
