The primary purpose of this position, PAINTER, WG-4102-10, is to perform the full range of painting and blasting, including surface preparation, blending and matching paints, inspecting, evaluating, and correcting defects on various weapons systems and removable parts - including the application of a spectrum of various specialty coatings.
Duties
Application of complex coatings and materials.
Apply Low Observable Coatings and other materials using brushes, rollers, spray guns, stencils, and other means of application.
Use and maintain manual and electronic tools and equipment.
Prepare various surfaces of interior and exterior components by mechanically and chemically removing old paint and rust, filling cracks, sanding, and applying fillers and base coats.
In accordance with established procedures and technical requirements, apply a thorough knowledge and prepare a wide variety of parts, materials, and/or components for blasting, stripping, or cleaning.

- Exposure to toxic paints, chemicals, or other hazards may require occupational health examinations.
- May be required to operate, maintain, and program automated/robotic systems and equipment.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4100 Painting and Paperhanging Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The painter prepares, and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and in situations where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. This requires the ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Ability to lift, carry, and set up materials and equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds. Occasionally, may be required to lift and carry 25 pounds and over with assistance.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is done inside with spray, and fumes and dust are usually present. The painter/blaster is required to prepare, treat, and finish surfaces. Work areas are not heated/air-conditioned, and temperatures fluctuate. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be required and supplied: sometimes PPE can be heavy and uncomfortable. Subject to intermittent dust and fumes. Subject to contact with solvents (degreasing agents), grease and oils. Works in shop areas around electrical energy, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, and moving objects or vehicles. Works using ladders, scaffolding, and various AGE equipment. Subject to vibration from handheld sanding equipment. Works closely with others. Must wear protective equipment including coveralls, gloves, eye and ear protection, and a respirator.
