Duties

This position is located in the Office of Data Science Strategy (ODSS), Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Coordination (DPCPSI), Office of the Director (OD), National Institutes of Health (NIH). New opportunities in areas of AI such as multimodal AI and generative AI present enormous opportunity to advance the NIH mission but with these come increased risks to scientific transparency, privacy, and alignment of AI to ethics principles and the Nation's goals for health equity. To address these challenges in ways that benefit the NIH mission, NIH must change from being a consumer of AI technologies to being an innovator of AI in collaboration with experts in mathematics, computer science, AI, and ethics. This change requires NIH to enhance interagency partnerships that engage outside experts and to leverage novel funding mechanisms that keep pace with rapid developments in AI. Without these efforts it will result in a continuation of the status quo where new AI capabilities are developed without the necessary attention and expertise to address the ethical and social challenges. This position in ODSS would develop and oversee NIH-wide research initiatives in AI as well as coordinate activities across the ICs, with other HHS agencies, and with other science funding agencies such as DOE and NSF. This position will require deep expertise in AI and an understanding of the needs of biomedical and health applications.
