This position is located in the Division of Maintenance of Canyonlands National Park and duty stationed in Moab, Utah. This position reports directly to the Chief of Maintenance for Canyonlands National Parks. The position works closely with the Administrative Assistant and Facility Management Specialists. The employee in this position is responsible for supervising the district's maintenance employees..
Duties
Major Duties:
Supervision - Provide technical and administrative supervision over subordinates performing various trades and labor occupations. Perform various administrative functions as a supervisor, such as preparing and implementing short term work plans; providing input to higher-level managers on long-term planning; determine material, equipment, and training needs; review and approve purchases and travel; writing scopes of work (SOW) for contracting packages; overseeing various programs and agreements (e.g., youth activities); reviewing, tracking, and/or providing input into organizational needs assessments.
Establish performance standards for subordinates, makes formal appraisals of employee's work performance, counsel employees, manages work schedules and approves leave, prepare recruitment documents, and make selections from certificates.
Provide professional and technical support and knowledge on utilities, trades, and crafts such as electrical, HVAC, potable water system operation, drainage, storm and sanitary sewer systems, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, painting, trails, grounds keeping and janitorial services.
Water Treatment Operations - Apply basic health, sanitary and mechanical principles and practices to ensure proper operation and maintenance of microbiological and physical chemical processes for efficient treatment of potable water distribution systems. The incumbent will operate hypochlorinators, solution tanks, pressure tanks, valves, mixed media filters and reciprocating pumps associated with surface water and well water operations.
Physical Demands: The position requires indoor office work that is mostly sedentary and outdoor fieldwork in a variety of temperatures and weather conditions. This position requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, crawl, climb stairs and ladders, and to perform a degree of physical effort in lifting and carrying moderate loads. Work is occasionally performed in cramped or other uncomfortable positions. Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and setting up of equipment is involved. Items weighing up to 100 lbs. are occasionally lifted. Stamina to work and drive long distances over rough terrain in a 4x4 vehicle is required.
Working Conditions: Work is both indoors and outdoors, Temperature's extremes encountered range from 0 degree's F in the winter to 110 degree's F in the summer. Terrain is steep and rocky resulting in unstable footing and driving surfaces. Hazards include snake bite, scorpion and wasp stings, sunburn, dehydration, bruises scrapes and cactus punctures. Spray, fumes, dust, dirt, and grease are present. Occasional exposure of skin and eyes to strong solvents, detergents, and other irritants. Must be able to effectively perform duties in isolated work location. Must be willing and able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Area Information:
Canyonlands National Park preserves a wilderness of rock at the heart of the Colorado Plateau. Water and gravity have been the prime architects of this land, cutting flat layers of sedimentary rock into hundreds of canyons, mesas, buttes, fins, arches and spires.
On-site Park housing is available.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
Ability To Lead or Supervise (SCREEN OUT).
Maintenance Worker Supervisors at this level provide leadership and guidance on multiple projects occurring at the same time associated with at least two of the following trades:
Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, Masonry, Water treatment operations, and/or Painting.
Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
Use of measuring Instruments
Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (including blueprint reading) & Use of measuring instruments.
Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
Knowledge of materials.
