Duties

Conducts research and gathers and maintains environmental data for mitigation of surface and subsurface impacts;. Coordinates and participates in inspections; inspects construction sites for surrounding ecosystem and habitat impact; and develops, recommends and implements plans to accomplish program surface protection goals. Serves as an environmental advisor and evaluator to the Field or District Office interdisciplinary staff on programmatic, technical and regulatory actions when dealing with issues concerning hazardous waste cleanup and/or environmental protection. Arranges and participates in the inspection of proposed and abandoned oil and gas drill sites and abandoned mine sites to determine the potential environmental impacts. Participates in inventory collection and monitoring activities that support land use plans; provides technical advice and assistance to managers; and conducts studies and surveys to identify problems. Coordinates and consults with local Tribal Councils, State or Federal Agencies, and special interest groups; and meets with operators to discuss mitigation measures. Makes recommendations on implementation of mitigation measures to reduce the impacts on the environment.

For GS-07: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: The trainee must have a working knowledge and practical experience in the application of physical and resource sciences, which may include biology, ecology, chemistry, geology, hydrology, soils, range conservation, and wildlife. The advanced trainee must have a basic knowledge of natural resource and environmental protection and analysis concepts, principles, and procedures.The employee must have the skills to interpret and apply findings, develop recommendations and document those recommendations in a report or in a legal document. The employee must have the ability to search legal and related source documents for information.The trainee must have the ability to prepare and present reports on completed work or assignments in an organized and concise manner.The employee must have the ability to utilize computer equipment and software applications to input, manipulates, update, and maintain data and request reports.The employee must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. General working knowledge of oil and gas operations. OR 1 full year of graduate level education OR superior academic achievement OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. To qualify for GS-09, to be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled. Specialized Experience for the GS-09 Environmental Protection Specialist: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in Environmental Protection Specialist work. At this level, recurring assignments that are independently performed are more difficult & complex than those performed at the lower grade level. Examples of specialized experience include: exercising judgment and a broad perspective in applying a thorough knowledge of the principles, concepts, and practices relating to environmental protection programs; OR 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master`s degree or master`s or equivalent graduate degree in a directly related field of study. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work; OR have an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. Only graduate education in excess of 1 full year of graduate level education may be used to qualify applicants for positions at grade GS-9. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The individual in this position performs work in an office setting, however, considerable field work is required to gather data, conduct evaluations and meet with industry operators. The individual may be required to walk or ride vehicles over rough terrain, perform duties that require recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching or lifting. Work may also include lifting of moderately heavy items, such as equipment and samples. Work Environment: The incumbent works in an office setting, however, field work is required to complete projects. The employee may be exposed to discomfort from harsh weather. The incumbent may subjected to hostile wildlife, chemical and physical hazards.
