The primary purpose of this position is to provide emergency police, fire and medical services to the public by answering emergency E-911 calls and responding with appropriate personnel and equipment. Maintain all emergency responses equipment and personnel to ensure prompt and accurate response. Provide advance emergency medical dispatch (EMD) life support through pre-arrival instructions to callers.

Duties

Provide emergency E-911-call taking and dispatching services. Perform EMD services to callers with medical emergencies. Maintain maps, checklists, and charts, including automated programs. Operate and maintain telephones, automated data processing equipment, printers, recorders, facsimile equipment, and other devices installed in the dispatch center. Prepare and maintain reports and records relating to emergency responses.

  • Employee is required to work a 40-hour week, which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays work and may be subject to recall.
  • Employee must participate in recurrent proficiency training, exercises by relaying accurate information, be resourceful and alert to adequately perform duties
  • Must be able to relocate to the alternate Fire Alarm Communication center (FACC ) location, or use any available general purpose vehicle. Must be able to transport 30 - 35 lbs. of books and equipment during relocation process
  • Must possess and maintain a valid civilian and government drivers license. Work may be required to travel on a commercial or military aircraft to attend temporary duty for training purposes
  • 'Key' position IAW AFI 36-507. Duties are essential to the accomplishment of wartime/contingency operations. Incumbent must be removed from their military recall status if alternatives for filling the position during an emergency are not available
  • Employee must obtain maintain required certifications, i.e., International Fire Service Accreditation Congress Certification as a Telecommunicator, Level II; EMO certifications, including initial and follow-on certification; (CONT'D)
  • CPR certification; HAZMAT Awareness
  • May be required to respond on off-duty time during conflagration, or stay over until emergency termination or until properly relieved by a qualified dispatcher

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Clerical and Administrative Support Positions. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level (or equivalent in other pay systems) in the federal service in which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience is experience which includes performing communications operations for emergency response including 911 communications equipment; performing basic computer operations to include word processing, retrieval, and input of data for emergency notifications; and dispatching appropriate equipment and personnel to medical, fire, rescue, and other types of emergencies for prompt and accurate response. OR EDUCATION: Successful completion of one full year of graduate education in a field related to the position being filled. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR TRANSCRIPTS. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100 percent. To combine education and experience, determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add the two percentages. Knowledge of communications operations, emergency response agencies and services, including polices, fire and medical. 2. Knowledge of basic computer operations to include word processing, retrieval, and input of data. A qualified typist is not required. 3. Knowledge of location and availability of emergency apparatus, the kind of apparatus and equipment needed for the emergency at hand. 4. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing using a calm a stable demeanor while dealing with emergencies. Ability to assess incoming information (problems presented) in fire, medical and other emergencies and quickly determine the proper dispatching course of action. 5. Knowledge of Emergency Medical Dispatch services, policies and procedures to determine the appropriate procedures for 911 callers. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
