This position is located with the Agricultural Research Service, Midwest Area, at the Environmentally Integrated Dairy Management Research Unit in Madison, WI. Physical duty station is Marshfield, WI. In this position, you will be responsible for providing general labor activities such as assisting maintenance personnel with facility maintenance and repairs, moving and organizing materials and supplies, custodial duties, landscaping, snow removal and minor equipment maintenance and repair work.

Duties

Performs general trash collection/removal from areas such as offices, restrooms, public areas, etc. Scrubs, strips, waxes, and polishes floors using powered scrubbers. Works on ladders and scaffolds to change light bulbs, wash walls, paint, etc. Uses various preparations to clean and maintain linoleum, tile and other kinds of floor, wall, and ceiling surfaces. Performs general labor activities such as material movement and transport, and landscape-related activities. Assists with equipment repair including moving and disassembling/assembling equipment under repair with guidance provided by the maintenance mechanic. Performs cleaning of general use and office areas including vacuuming, sweeping/mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms, washing windows, etc. Receives freight by means of operating a forklift and other lifting devices, such as dollies and hand trucks. Assists with maintenance of the USDA farm buildings including painting, exterior cleaning/ power washing, and general maintenance/repairs with guidance provided by the maintenance mechanic.

Requirements

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 05/20/2024 Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. Applicants who do not meet the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT will not be given further consideration. Physical Effort: Will be required to exert very heavy physical effort in the performance of assigned duties. Employees at this level frequently lift and move equipment and components weighing over 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Working Conditions: At this level laborers work outside in all kinds of weather, and inside in areas that may be dusty, drafty, and noisy. The equipment, tools, and tasks involved at this level frequently require extreme care and use of safety gloves, ear plugs, safety glasses, or respirators to avoid severe injuries. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
