This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DOD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Serve as a Maintenance Mechanic for FT Walker Directorate of Public Works Operations & Maintenance Division. Veterans and Military Spouses will be considered along with all other candidates.

Duties

Repair, construct, alter and maintain, wood/wood substitute components of buildings and structures. Plans and completes projects from initial layout to final assembly or installation. Work from drawings, sketches, and knowledge of construction methods and techniques. Install rafters, studs, sills, plates, braces, joists, floors, sub-floors, panels sheetrock, siding, roofing, insulating materials, interior and exterior trim.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This is a Term position scheduled to last 6 years. A term position may be extended to a maximum of six years depending upon the needs of management. Position may be made permanent.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

Qualifications

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. Perform variety of trades or craft duties involving the maintenance, repair and improvement of building, structures and related fixtures and utilities. Performs the full range of carpentry skills and techniques in repairing, constructing, altering and maintaining, wood/wood substitute components of buildings and structures where soundness or appearance are important. Works from drawings, sketches, and own knowledge of construction methods and techniques. Repairs and rebuilds cabinets (countertops, drawers, doors and hardware). Repairs and replaces all types of doors [i.e., entry doors, interior doors, closet doors (folding, sliding, and pocket-type), screen doors, and storm doors. Repairs and replaces hardware items including standard locksets, deadbolt locksets, pneumatic and hydraulic door closers etc. Repair, replace, re-keying, cleaning and opening locked file containers. Places and connects water, steam, and gas fixtures and facilities such as sinks, commodes, tubs, and urinals. Apply a variety of graphic arts techniques, including freehand and mechanical lettering, and silk screen printing.- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: Must independently lift large bulky and hard to grasp objects weighing up to 50 pounds or heavier objects with the assistance of other workers. May work in tight or cramped places in uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. Works while standing, sitting, or kneeling requiring reaching, lifting and bending while using hand tool and powered tools. Uses ladders to climb up and down and works from scaffolding. Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside. Proper clothing can protect against outside exposure to heat and cold. Inside work is usually in buildings adequately heated, lighted and ventilated. Noise from hammers saws and other power shop tools is frequent. May occasionally have to make repairs or installations in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. Will occasionally be exposed to methane (sewer) gas and fumes, solvents, paints and other chemicals. Incumbent is subject to irritation of eyes and skin from exposure to fumes solvents, paints and other chemicals. Injuries may occur in lifting heavy pieces of lumber or equipment; cuts and bruises using hand tools and equipment; more serious injuries in operating power tools and in falls from ladders and scaffolds.
