About the Position: This position is located at U.S. Army Medical Command Headquarters, US Army Medical Center of Excellence, located Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. Incumbent performs organizational maintenance and repairs to gasoline and diesel tactical and non-tactical vehicles, forklifts and small engines.

Duties

Perform organizational and field maintenance and repairs to gasoline and diesel vehicles. Repairs items by removing, replacing, adjusting, or cleaning defective parts or components. Operates a variety of tactical and non-tactical motor vehicles (e.g., cargo vans, passenger shuttle vans, ambulances, troop transport vehicles, vehicles with hydraulic lift). Operate a wide variety of motor vehicles ranging in size from one-half ton pickup to tractor-trailer rig to pick up; deliver, and move supplies and materials both on and off post.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random drug testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • Position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health to perform the duties of the position.
  • Position requires the employee to possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Your resume must show tat you possess the ability to do the work of an Automotive Worker (Motor Vehicle Operator) without more than normal supervision, performing such tasks as: performs organizational maintenance and repairs to gasoline and diesel tactical and non-tactical vehicles, forklifts and small engines. Repairs items by removing, replacing, adjusting, or cleaning defective parts or components. Replaces sensors, water pumps, spark plugs, brake shoes, mufflers, condensers, engine gaskets, belts and hoses. Adjusts brakes, transmission linkages, engine idle, voltage and current control valves, sensing valves, expansion valves, and pressure regulator valves. Cleans or replaces filters, screens, battery cables, and clamps, engine components, and heating and cooling devices, glow plugs, starters, alternators, and relays. Services and checks air conditioning systems, purging and replacing anti-freeze solutions. Aligns front ends of cars and trucks by adjusting caster and camber, and setting toe-in. Installs new assemblies such as clutches, differentials, front and rear axles, transfer cases, etc. Installs and services tailgate hydraulic lifts. Adjusts and replaces parts of major systems such as cylinder heads, valve covers, exhaust and intake valves, and differentials. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element)Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc.MechanicalTrouble Shooting Physical Effort: The work requires standing for long periods of time, bending, stooping, crawling under and on top of vehicles, and making repairs in other tight spaces. Frequently works in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, handles, and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally, moves moderately heavy items weighing up to or over 50 pounds with assistance or with mechanical devices. Working Conditions: The work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to heat, cold, drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles. Floors may be wet. Occasionally, work is performed outside under adverse weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to dirt, dust, and grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains. To reduce danger and irritations from these conditions, prescribed safety practices are followed and safety equipment such as safety glasses, respirators, and hearing protective devices are used.
