Duties

This position serves as a Student Trainee (Administration) for the Utah State Office, Division of Support Services. Receives incoming telephone calls and visitors. Answers general questions from internal and external customers or refers customers to the appropriate staff member. Provides customer support and administrative support using office automation to type a wide variety of reports, graphs, forms, etc. Maintains office records and files by filing or purging records. Fills in for office administrative staff during short periods of absence and helps with special projects. Provides mail operations such as receiving, sorting, and routing mail and correspondences to the appropriate staff.

  • Appointment will be subject to a favorably adjudicated background/suitability investigation/determination.
  • The entire period served as a Career/Indefinite Intern counts as the appointee's trial period. Prior Federal civilian service is credited toward the completion of the required trial period in the same manner as prescribed in 5 CFR 315.802.

Qualifications

To be eligible, an applicant must: Be at least 16 years of age or older for a non-arduous or non-hazardous duty position. Applicants must be current students pursuing a degree or certificate in a qualifying educational institution with an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher; AND Maintain at least a half time or full time course load at the time of appointment and throughout the Pathways internship. In order to assess you meet a qualified status for this position and to refer you to the hiring manager, the agency must be able to determine that you meet the qualifications based on completed education. To qualify at the GS-03 level you must meet the following: Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed one (1) full academic year (30 semester hours) of post-high school study. To qualify at the GS-04 level you must meet the following: Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed two (2) full academic years (60 semester hours) of post-high school study or an associate's degree. CONVERSION ELIGIBILITY: Interns may be converted, without a break in service, to a term, career or career-conditional appointment upon completion of program requirements. To be eligible for conversion, interns must: Be a U.S. Citizen Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program Complete their degree or certificate requirements Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement Perform their job successfully CAUTION FOR STUDENTS IN THEIR FINAL YEAR: Students that are graduating and are not subsequently enrolled in another program might not meet the work-hour requirements prior to graduation and will be at risk for not being able to convert to a career or career-conditional appointment. Academic Year: At the undergraduate level, 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours is comparable to 1 year of undergraduate education. Four years of progressive study or 120 semester hours meets the degree requirements. At the graduate level, 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours. You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary. Some work may require walking and standing in conjunction with travel and attendance at meetings, training, and/or conferences away from the work site. The student trainee may carry light items, such as papers, books, or small parts, or drive a motor vehicle. The work does not require any special physical effort. Work Environment: Work is primarily performed in an office setting that involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of offices (e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals, etc.). The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
