Duties

You will install, repair, inspect, operate, maintain, and service specialized heating ventilation air conditioning systems. You will maintain/service compressed air generating, drying, and oil removal equipment for pneumatic controllers. You will read blueprints, complex drawings, sketches, wiring diagrams, manufacturing specifications and technical materials. You will ensure piping systems are kept clean/free of obstructions, vibrations, deposits, leaks, and are properly mounted.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver's license.
  • You will be required to possess a Universal EPA Refrigerant Certification (includes completion of 608 cert exam) issued by the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current CPR certification.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Mechanic must be able to become certified in Confined Space Safety, Backflow Prevention, and Refrigerant Recovery.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You will be required to sign a mobility agreement to accept relocation to other geographic locations if required by the employer.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. Applicants must possess a Universal EPA Refrigerant Certification (includes completion of 608 cert exam) issued by the Environmental Protection Agency. You must attach a copy of this certification to your application package to be considered for the position. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: I have the ability to perform common tasks including: 1) Possesses the ability to interpret blueprints, complex drawings, sketches, wiring diagrams, manufacturing specification and technical materials. 2) Repair and overhaul work requires knowledge of the construction characteristics of a variety of types and models of systems that are designed to reach and maintain critical and extreme conditions under a variety of circumstances. 3) Knowledge of the analog control systems or knowledge of the direct digital controls (DDC) for the automated control of the HVAC systems. 4) Knowledge of DDC devices and software including programmable logic controllers, computers and peripherals which provide a centralized computer network-oriented approach. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Physical Demands: Systems are large and heavy and require setting up motors, compressors, and associated equipment in place. The mechanic makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and ground level; and stoop, stretch, bend, and kneel for long periods. The work requires frequent carrying and setting up of parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally may lift items weighing over 50 pounds with assistance. Working Conditions: The incumbent works both inside and outside, on top of tall buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Personal protective equipment such as protective clothing, helmets, goggles, respirators, etc. may be required to be worn when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants during regular maintenance and repair or when making emergency repairs. Working conditions are considered in the evaluation of the job and do not meet criteria for compensation by environmental or hazard pay.
