About the Position: Serves as a Steersman of the Dredge Potter and small towing vessels under the direct supervision of the Master in support of the Dredge Potter and its mission as well other District assets to include the M/V Pathfinder and Grand Tower.

Duties
Operates vessel by manipulating pilothouse controls governing the speed and direction of the .boat
Stands a scheduled watch.
Performs daily maintenance checks and maintains vessels in a safe, clean, orderly manner.
Replenish fuels, lubricants, and other supplies on the vessel.
During lay-up periods from operations may be utilized and assigned to other essential work in the District.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires a USCG License. Incumbent must obtain and maintain Steersman, Western Rivers license (Merchant Marine Credential) and Radar Observer within 12 months of employment.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a 100-ton Master boat operator's permit.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment and annual physical examination to ensure required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position meets the criteria for random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Army Drug-Free Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE ER 690-1-1218.
- Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 7412, Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified Safety-Sensitive Under the DOT, Federal Highway Administration Rules on Drug and Alcohol Testing.
- Must possess a valid state issued vehicle driver’s license prior to employment and maintain thereafter.

I am skilled in performing daily maintenance checks, transferring fuel from tanks and barges, and making routine operating repairs - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Physical exertion is required in lifting heavy parts, tying up barges, etc. May lift up to 50 pounds or more. Work may involve long periods of standing, lifting, climbing, and walking. Incumbent must have color and depth perception and be able to see in low visibility conditions in order to navigate a dredge, tenders, towboats and other vessels. Operating the vessel requires standing for long periods with continual hand and eye coordination.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works around moving machinery and floating plant. Physical exertion is required in lifting heavy parts, tying up barges, etc. Works both inside and outside during a variety of weather conditions and climates, including extremes of heat and cold and heavy rainfall. There is a danger of slipping from floating plant into water with possibility of physical injury or drowning. On-shore work may involve working in mud, snow, or ice, in dirty or cramped situations. There is danger of injury as a result of snapping cables and lines moving heavy equipment and lifting heavy anchors. There is exposure to traffic hazards, especially at night.
