About the Position: Serves as a Health Technician (Orthopedics) in the Directorate of Surgery - Orthopedic Surgery at Fort Liberty's Womack Army Medical Center located in Fort Liberty, North Carolina. Performs technical work of medical nature subordinate to orthopedic surgeon, physicians and therapeutists in the Orthopedic Services, which provides inpatient and outpatient orthopedic care to military personnel and their dependents. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation.

Duties

Assisting the orthopedic surgeon, and physicians providing inpatient and outpatient orthopedic care. Prepare and coordinate request for surgery with appropriate personnel. Provides surgical assistance for treatment of patients. Ensure work area is clean by disposing contaminated supplies and equipment. Serves as surgical assistant to orthopedic surgeons during minor surgery and treatment of patients. Advise physicians and nurses of potential problems or changes of inpatients in traction devises.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to sign DA Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Orthopedic treatment of injuries and disease of the bone, muscle, joints and tissue sufficient to assist an Orthopedic Surgeon with major and minor surgeries; and 2) assisting the Orthopedic physician with surgical equipment, instruments and supplies; and 3) fabricating and applying plaster splints, plaster casts including upper and lower extremity, neck and back casts. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Anatomy, Biology, or Orthopedic Surgery. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
