Duties

Methods and procedures-Applies conventional methods to the preparation and analysis of field/remote sensing observations and/or laboratory samples. Data Collection/Analysis: The scientist applies a range of standard geologic and/or geochemical techniques to acquire data and samples. Geologic Interpretation: Analyzes and interprets geological and geophysical data and carries out investigations. Reporting/Documenting: Contributes to technically authoritative reports on geologic and related studies. Communication of Findings: Communicates findings in a variety of formats and settings.

Requirements

For GS-07: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess either: one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: General experience interpreting and applying applicable statues, regulations, procedures and policies to process typical solid minerals actions. Fundamental experience to support inspection of mineral operations for enforcement of solid minerals laws for standard situations. General experience gathering, assembling, analyzing and evaluating information regarding typical solid mineral activity. Fundamental experience developing NEPA documentation. -OR- 1 year of graduate-level education in a related field of study or superior academic achievement -OR- Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience. For GS-09: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess either: one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: General experience interpreting and applying applicable statues, regulations, procedures and policies, to process typical solid minerals actions. Fundamental experience to support inspection of mineral operations for enforcement of solid minerals laws for standard situations. Experience gathering, assembling, analyzing and evaluating information regarding typical solid mineral activity. Experience developing NEPA documentation. Experience participating in interdisciplinary teams. -OR- 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field of study -OR- Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience. For GS-11: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess either: One (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Experience interpreting and applying applicable statues, regulations, procedures and policies to process less typical solid minerals actions. Experience to support inspection of mineral operations for enforcement of solid minerals laws for unique situations. Experience gathering, assembling, analyzing and evaluating information regarding solid mineral activity. Experience developing NEPA documentation. Experience participating in interdisciplinary teams. -OR- 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field of study. -OR- Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Education

THIS POSITION HAS A POSITIVE EDUCATION REQUIREMENT. YOU MUST MEET ONE OF THE TWO BELOW:
Basic Requirements:
  1. Degree: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

  2. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
