Duties
Operates gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler type traction, such as road graders, tractors with bulldozer or angle dozer blades, front-end loaders, excavators, backhoes, wheel loader, and trench diggers. Operates up to 14 cubic yard straight dump trucks or truck tractor with belly or side dump trailers for the purpose of moving dirt, blacktop, coarse materials for roadway and shoulder, hauling riprap, barriers, and logs. Hauls debris, stone, gravel, and soil as required. Operates pickup trucks for transportation of personnel and equipment to job sites. Operation may require use of airbrake systems and multi-geared standard/auxiliary transmissions, automatic transmissions, and PTOs. Skill in use of all accepted trade methods and techniques; extensive skill in use of tools of different trades: equipment, carpentry, plumbing, and electric.
Area Information:
This position is located at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, (http://www.nps.gov/caha), in the Division of Maintenance, and supports the maintenance of park structures within the maintenance program. Ocracoke, NC is among several small villages located on the islands of the Outer Banks of North Carolina-a beach vacation destination. Park housing will not be provided. The village contains a grocery store, a bank, and multiple restaurants. The local medical center provides basic treatment. The nearest hospital, as well as national chain department/drug stores and restaurants, may be located over two hours away and require travel by ferry to reach. Cost of living on the Outer Banks is somewhat expensive. There is no public transportation available in the area-it is strongly recommended that employees have a private vehicle available for personal use.
