This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC), Facility Services Operations & Maintenance Unit in Beltsville, MD.
In this position, you will be responsible for provide maintenance and repairs in the areas of automotive and general utilities.
Duties
Provides maintenance and repairs for a variety of parts, components and accessories for motor vehicles, construction equipment, and utilities support equipment (both gasoline and diesel powered).
Adjusts brakes, transmission linkages, engine idle, voltage and currents control valves, sensing valves, expansion valves, and pressure regulator valves.
Cleans or replaces filters, screens, battery cables and clamps, engine components, and heating and cooling devices. Flushes radiators and replaces anti-freeze solution.
Turns brake rotors and drums, turns stator and replace pads, overhauls wheel and master cylinders and makes necessary adjustments.
Occasionally operates tractor trailer and wrecker to provide emergency road service.
Performs front-end alignment on vehicles and mobile equipment.
Troubleshoots problems on diesel engines (i.e., combustion powered generator systems including load equalizing units) and performs minor maintenance and repairs.
Requirements
- You must be a US Citizen or US National.
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.

- Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.

- During inclement weather (i.e.., snow, ice) may be required to work outside of normal work schedule.

Working Conditions
Work is performed inside and outside. Work inside is performed in drafty quarters and incumbent is subject to cuts, abrasions, burns, and fall form slippery floors. The nature of the work is dirty, greasy, and noisy. Outside work requires the incumbent to service cars in all types of weather and requires for on- and - off road service of vehicle.
Physical Effort
Requires crawling, bending, standing, and working in various strained positions for a considerable portion of working time; close hand-and-eye coordination in performing critical assembly and adjustment tasks, heavy lifting, pulling, or pushing of assemblies.
