The primary purpose of this position is to provide legal assistance, administrative, and office automation services to support the military and civilian attorneys and other legal specialists assigned to the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate.
Duties
Provide legal assistance support for Staff Judge Advocate and other staff attorneys; anticipates need for information pertaining to legal matters and prepares materials on own initiative.
Provide legal assistance and guidance to clients; prepares legal documentation for clients by assisting in the completion of forms and documents such as affidavits, bills of sale, promissory notes, contracts, or other similar legal documents and correspondence.
Review and prepare incoming and outgoing administrative correspondence, reports, and messages; review outgoing correspondence with Staff Judge Advocate's signature for grammar, spelling, punctuation, format, technical and nontechnical terminology, and conformance with established policies and procedures.
Prepare monthly and annual reports by tracking statistics and assembling and analyzing data. Develops findings, recommendations, and justifications.
Use multiple office automation software programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, to create, copy, edit, print, update, produce, and maintain accurate and useful documents.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Clerical and Administrative Support Positions.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level (or equivalent in other pay systems) in the federal service in which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience is experience which includes assisting in preparing and editing legal documents and administrative correspondence, maintaining files and records; assembling information for various legal documents and reports, assisting in performing a substantial range of functions such as, but not limited to generating tables of contents, importing graphs or databases, creating glossaries, aligning multiple columns, automatically printing document identification for an office staff and may involve direct assistance to attorneys and other legal specialists by performing necessary legal research.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of one full year of graduate level education in a field directly related which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position (i.e. Law School, Legal Studies, Paralegal studies). A qualified typist of at least 40 words per minute is required.

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100 percent. To combine education and experience, determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPT.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of rules, procedures, policies, and programs of the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate to perform the procedural and administrative work of the organization such as preparing and editing legal documents and administrative correspondence, maintaining files and records, and assembling information for various legal documents and reports; and knowledge of legal services and terminology in the area of claims, civil law, military justice, legal assistance, and legal research techniques.
2. Knowledge of office functions to screen telephone calls and visitors, prepare and review correspondence, and perform other administrative work of the organization.
3. Knowledge of grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and required legal formats and directives regarding preparation of written communications to produce legal and administrative documents and communications.
4. Knowledge of various office automation software programs, tools, and techniques to support office operations and produce a variety of documents such as letters, reports, spreadsheets, databases, and graphs. Skill in typing; a qualified typist is required.
5. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and ability to interpret and apply regulatory and procedural requirements to process unusually difficult and complicated transactions.
6. Knowledge of U.S. probate and trust laws to produce wills and trusts for legal assistance clients, and knowledge of State and Federal laws affecting deploying military forces to include the Soldiers and Sailors Civil Relief Act, civil and criminal court jurisdiction, and child support and jurisdiction laws.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
