About the Position: You will serve as a Forestry Technician with the US Army Garrison Hawaii (USAG-HI) Directorate of Emergency Services (DES), Wheeler Army Airfield, Island of Oahu, working as part of a 10-man Strike Team in support of the installation's Integrated Wildland Fire Management Plan (IWFMP).
Duties
Participate in a variety of prevention, detection, wildfire suppression, pre-suppression, and prescribed burning duties.
Uses wildland fire related tools and equipment.
Assist in directing activities in a complex fire environment, helping to train other participants.
Carry out specialized assignments such as backfire or burnout, mobile and stationary engine, or other specialized equipment operation.
Maintain and monitor conditions of firefighting equipment, fire cache warehouse and supplies, and Remote Automated Weather Stations (RAWS), fire buckets.
Perform wildfire prevention activities such as patrolling to gage fire potential and occurrence, distributing literature, explaining wildfire prevention program to the public and base populace, and preparing fire reports.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This is an Army Drug Testing Designated Position (TDP); incumbent must submit to and pass random drug tests.
- Incumbent is subject to annual medical examination and must pass the Work Capacity Test (WCT) for arduous positions.
- Incumbent is subject to recall 24 hours per day, seven days a week, in case of emergency, to suppress range or forest fires.
- Incumbent is subject to weekend shift assignments.
- Incumbent must possess or obtain and maintain a valid State license and/or government license to operate vehicles up to 25,000 GVW.
- Incumbent must satisfactory complete training from the installation fire department on the operation of vehicles and equipment in support of firefighting activities for this position. (AR-420-90)
- Position is considered essential to support mobilization and wartime mission during periods of increasing tension or mobilization; failure to remain in your position may result in separation for the efficiency of the Federal Service.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience assisting with wildland fire management activities, such as prescribed burning, wildland fire suppression, fire tower operations, and/ or fire standby. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
