About the Position: The incumbent will serve as a Senior Chemist, responsible for providing technical expertise in New England District's mission in support of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund Program, the Department of Defense Defense Environmental Restoration program for the Formerly Used Defense Sites and active Installation, Base Realignment and Closure sites, Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program, and other customers as needed.
Duties
Work with electronic databases for storage and retrieval of project data for various environmental media, such as groundwater, soil, indoor air, etc.
Validate, evaluate, and interpret environmental laboratory test results.
Support complex, high profile projects, especially with emerging contaminants that benefit from senior level chemist.
Advise on chemistry, sampling, and analysis of alternatives for toxic and hazardous waste site operations to determine the presence, nature, and concentration of chemical contaminants.
Collaborate with other agencies and USACE design organizations, including the Environmental and Munitions Center of Expertise (EMCX) to share and exchange advances in analytical chemistry and data handling.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license within 30 days of employment.
- This position requires the completion of Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) worker protection training within six months of employment.
- HAZWOPER training required prior to performing intrusive sampling work due to the potential exposure and significant physical stress factors that occur while wearing protective equipment.
- This position may involve occasional fieldwork on evenings and/or weekends.
- This position requires the performance of work in a field setting, sometimes involving moderate hazard in precipitous terrain and exposure to varying and extreme weather conditions.
- This position may require the ability to climb, stoop, bend, or stand for long periods of time.
- This position may require the completion of a baseline medical monitoring physical and annual audiometric testing as needed.
- Physical and annual audiometric testing required prior to performing intrusive sampling work due to the potential exposure and significant physical stress factors that occur while wearing protective equipment.

Basic Requirement for the Chemist 1320 Series:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work equivalent to a major in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
GS-13: One year of specialized experience includes meeting all of the following: 1) Evaluating database applications and recommending system improvements; 2) Furnishing chemistry subject matter expert advice to other organizations; 3) Preparing technical reports and leading technical discussions related to the collection and analysis of emerging contaminants and contaminated media; and 4) Supporting complex, high profile projects, especially with emerging contaminant considerations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12) or equivalent level.
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirements using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
