You will serve as a SHIP PROGRESSMAN (SHIPS TANK TESTER) in the STRUCTURAL SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will prepare and process work permits, ripout, and reentry forms as required and assume custody from ship's force of all built-in tanks. You will coordinate work of all trades in built-in tanks, provide advice and assistance as necessary to ensure timely completion of tank work. You will assist the Ship Superintendent, Area/Zone Manager, Shipboard Test and Ship Scheduler to establish sequence and priority of test and key operations concerning built-in tank work. You will initiate tank work certification form to the Area/Zone Manager of each trade involved prior to completion.

• Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
• This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO PROVIDE PRODUCTION SUPPORT SERVICES: Keeps records, charts, and maintains files of job orders instructions relative to built-in tank work, hull surveillance tests and completed inspection forms. Submits a gas-free inspection on request for tanks, voids, and free flood area to be worked by shops and codes. Performs weekly inspections in main ballast tanks (while in dry dock) for fire hazards and submits results to Area/Zone Managers. Must have ability to read and understand written instructions, read and interpret blueprints, work instructions and other technical guides as required. Must be thoroughly familiar with nuclear work and capable of being fully qualified.
