About the Position: Position is responsible for the planning and management of a comprehensive safety occupational health program to eliminate or control the risk of injury to personnel assigned to all phases of the safety and occupational health activities.

Duties

Interprets regulations, provides advice, and prepares written procedures for implementation of accident prevention program including mishap prevention and safe materials handling practices. Inspects work sites, evaluates hazards present, and implements changes to mitigate or reduce likelihood of personnel injury or damage to equipment. Develops, reviews and analyzes statistical data of accidents and injuries to determine trends. Identifies unhealthy conditions, unsafe noise levels, problems where respiratory equipment would be required and potential problems with hazardous and environmental exposures. Carries out safety education activities including accident prevention and good industrial hygiene practices; promotes safety through posters, displays of safety equipment; participates in community and regional safety planning conferences. Develops and provides technical safety training to supervisors and employees.

Requirements

• Must be able to operate a motor vehicle for long periods, potentially over uneven terrain.
• May be required to carry equipment/supplies up to 50 lbs.

OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or master's or equivalent graduate degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. GS-11 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Conducting inspections to ensure compliance with safety and occupational health laws and regulations. OR Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
