General Description of Assigned Duties: The Supervisor Medical Instrument Technician MIT(US) has primary responsibility for clinical operations in the Ultrasound (US) Section of the Imaging Service to plan, direct and provide oversight of the delivery of US services at the Charles George VA Medical Center
Duties
Major Duties:
Employ HPDM II leadership principles to sustain an Ultrasound Section that is effective, efficient, and has staff reaching their optimal level of performance. Develop standard operating procedures, guidelines, checklists, and best practices and promote briefings and other tools of Clinical Team Training to foster an effective care team. Use leadership skills to sustain efficient processes and engage staff to adapt to new procedures and techniques, and uphold the standards, goals, and mission of the medical center. Make significant contributions to direct patient care with personal mastery of processes and techniques.
Verify and maintain staff competencies, including training, continuing education, coaching, and mentoring. Staff competencies include knowledge and skills related to the duties of an Ultrasound technologist, and general competencies of a VA employee.
Serve as the principal quality manager for the Ultrasound Section. Provide oversight of technical and clinical quality with monitors and indices of quality, and initiate corrections as needed. Facilitate and oversee performance improvement activities, including study design, data collection, analysis, corrective actions, and follow-up.
Monitor equipment maintenance and service, ensuring that equipment is maintained within optimal specifications. Serve as liaison to in house Biomedical Engineering, vendor service engineers, vendor account executives to address equipment repair, scheduled maintenance, technical upgrades and enhancements, and any other aspects of service to achieve optimal equipment performance.
Foster a culture of job and patient safety. This includes safe patient handling, infection control, and overall safety with promotion of staff involvement and empowerment (e.g., "stop-the-line" authority).
When needed, perform the technical, clinical, and administrative functions of a staff Medical Instrument Technician (Ultrasound), detailed in the functional statement.
The incumbent reports to the Assistant Chief Technologist and Chief Technologist, Imaging Service for Clinical and Administrative aspects of the position.
Work assignments are implicit in the clinical operational duties listed above and in the annual Performance Plan with additional specific assignments generated in Imaging Leadership meetings or through personal communication.
The incumbent is responsible to independently provide oversight of clinical operations in the IR Section: make work assignments to team members, coordinate workflow and adapt to changing circumstances, ensure overall quality of work, radiation safety and technical guidance. The incumbent is responsible for compliance with various relevant standards, policies, and procedures, and uses independent judgement and leadership skills to resolve the majority of issues.
Work assignments are implicit in the administrative duties listed above and in the annual Performance Plan with additional specific assignments generated in Imaging Leadership meetings or through personal communication.
Work is reviewed in relation to elements detailed in the annual Performance Plan to include factors of completeness, accuracy, and timeliness.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 7:30am- 4:00pm

Basic Requirements:

There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. See the grade requirements part of this standard for information regarding educational substitutions.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
GS-10. In addition to the core competencies defined at the GS-9 level, positions at this grade may be supervisory or non-supervisory with specialized advanced knowledge and assignments.
Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. KSAs 1, 2, and 3 are appropriate for all positions at this level. KSAs 4 and 5 are to be used in accordance with their appropriateness for the specific assignment.
Advanced knowledge of complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques.
Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program.
Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations.
Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer the allocated budget.
Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation; selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions.
Preferred Experience: In charge/ leadership experience/ training, at least 1 year Diagnostic Ultrasound Technology Experience, Data Extraction and Analytical Experience.
