The primary purpose of this position is to instruct other mechanics in ground handling, servicing, and inspection of assigned aircraft; also instructs other mechanics in the removal, installation, testing, repair, troubleshooting, alignment, and calibration of aircraft parts, components, subassemblies, and equipment; provides instruction in jet engine operation.

Duties

- Instructs employees in systems familiarization, task qualification, and cross utilization training: Conducts formal classroom courses and informal training sessions to include hands-on practical training in aircraft ground handling, servicing, and inspection. - Develops courses of instruction to meet training requirements. Conducts task analysis, determines training objectives, and develops courses to meet qualification training requirements. - Develops evaluation instruments used to determine if students meet task qualifications, understand system operation, integration conditions, and troubleshooting techniques. Ensure written tests and practical evaluations are based on current technical data requirements and are protected from compromise. - Schedules training and training support equipment. Schedules training, as needed, to support requirements. Operates computer software programs to input tentative training schedules and schedule individuals requiring specific training. - Provides technical assistance and advice as required to support mission requirements. Evaluate training effectiveness to ensure system knowledge and task qualification requirements are met. Documents course completions and reports training program status.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.
  • Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety.
  • Requires some physical exertion which may include at times such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, slippery, and/or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, kneeling, stretching,
  • pushing, pulling, reaching; and recurring lifting and carrying of moderately heavy items occasionally items up to 50 pounds). Requires specific but common physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average agility and dexterity.
  • Instruction is conducted in an aircraft maintenance environment, both around the aircraft and in the munitions bay, in clean, well-lighted, and well-ventilated production areas involving moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety
  • precautions, e.g., working around electrical and radiant energy and moving parts, carts, machines, and vehicles with exposure to irritant chemical and noise. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as
  • masks, boots, goggles, hearing protection, gloves, and/or shields. May involve some work outside on the flight line in a simulated flight line environment, subject to cold, heat, and/or dust.
  • The duties of this position require the employee to operate a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license is required.
  • This position requires Lead/supervisory duties.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8800, Aircraft Overhaul Group, Aircraft Mechanic. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge and proficiency in the performance of maintenance and repair of aircraft systems, airframe components and assemblies to include but not limited to performing aircraft ground handling, servicing, and inspection; jet engine run-up; and repair and replacement of assemblies and components for large body cargo/tanker aircraft. 2. Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques of aircraft systems. 3. Practical knowledge of the methods & techniques of instruction to include instructional system design process. 4. Knowledge of a wide range of the principles and practical methods, techniques, and tools of instruction to teach a variety of students with a range of differences such as diverse ages, backgrounds, and levels of interest. 5. Knowledge of instructional techniques for formal classroom and practical hands-on training. 6. Skilled in the removal, replacement, rigging, and adjustment of aircraft systems and components. Ability to detect and isolate malfunctions to determine when new assemblies, components, and parts should be installed; when items can be repaired or reworked; and the extent of adjustment required. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to perform stand-up instruction. Physical Effort: Capable of lifting heavy objects up to 75 lbs. Capable of prolonged standing and frequent climbing when performing instruction or working in and around aircraft. Working Conditions: In aircraft hangers or outside on the flight line, and in classrooms. Exposed to some noise hazards, toxic fumes, and potential of chemical burns, exposure to fire, explosion, and/or electrical shock. Individual required to wear safety toed shoes and other protective equipment when on the flight line and involved in teaching of certain maintenance tasks. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
