About the Position: Located on the Central Coast of California between Los Angeles and San Francisco; nearest towns - King City 26 miles north and Paso Robles 50 miles south; in a rural area - a vehicle is a must; bus, car and van pools are available from select locations.

Duties

Serve as the Geographic Information System (GIS) Coordinator for the Sustainable Range Program (SRP) and for all GIS programs under the area of responsibility of the Mission Support Element. Responsible for providing technical and management expertise in all areas of GIS programs and activities. The area of responsibility for this position includes all Army training areas on Fort Hunter Liggett (FHL).

Requirements

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • This position required the incumbent must participate in management meetings that may involve extended work hours.
  • In this position, incumbent may be exposed to hazardous and toxic substances and environment during inspections of firing ranges and training areas.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: GS-11 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes professional knowledge of Federal policies, procedures and practices related to Integrated Training Area Management program and Geographic Information Systems, range management, and environmental considerations, along with knowledge of planning, programming, and budgeting guidelines and processes.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. GS-12 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes work that involves coordinating operation aspects of military training, maneuver, combined arms, and safety requirements with natural resources, land and air, as well as infrastructure assets. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Attention to DetailGeographyTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent.
