Duties
Major Duties:
Performs a variety of duties of general nature in the routine operation, maintenance, and minor repairs of structures, utility and electrical components, campgrounds, picnic areas, and visitor centers.
Cleans restrooms, comfort stations, offices, shops, and other public use areas. Provides janitorial services as well as effecting repairs such as unplugging toilets, replacing washers, and minor repairs to surfaces such as walls, floors, and partitions.
Performs general grounds maintenance utilizing push mowers, weed eaters, riding mower, and all-terrain vehicles. Cleans and repairs grills and tables, collects and disposes of trash and litter, rebuilds tent pads, and does minor sign repair.
Required to render moderate to heavy assistance at times to other buildings operations. Work would include snow removal around facilities, storm cleanup, painting, utility work, and assisting journeyman level employees in completing maintenance projects.
Operates light automotive equipment and power tools.
Area/Duty Station Information:
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is located in the states of North Carolina and Tennessee and encompasses 800 square miles of which 95 percent are forested. The headquarters is located near the city of Gatlinburg, TN. There are 16 peaks over 6,000' in elevation and up to 90" of rainfall spread throughout the year. The Park has 10 campgrounds, 800 miles of horse and hiking trails, and 750 miles of fishable streams. The Smokies is within one day's drive for about 1/3 of the U.S. population and thus attracts 9 to 10 million visitors annually: making it the most visited, national park in the system. Climate is moderate with average lows in the summer in the 60's and highs in the 80's and 90's and average lows in winter between 20 and 30 with highs in the 50's. Snowfall averages range from 5" in Gatlinburg, TN, to 11" in Bryson City, NC.
Within Great Smoky Mountains National Park there are 514,000 acres, approximately 350 miles of road, 900 miles of surface and graded trails, 65 miles of Lake Fontana shoreline, 15 schedules cemetery visits across Fontana, 500 buildings and structures, 35 water system, 30 sewer systems, 10 major campgrounds, 11 picnic areas, various other utility systems, heating system, 88 historical buildings, 150 cemeteries, a radio system to include 9 - remote repeater sites, 74 housing units in three districts. Within the parks boundaries, there are two states, five counties, three congressional districts, five electrical suppliers and three water/sewer utility suppliers.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT)
Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
Use of measuring instruments
Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading)
Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment
Knowledge of materials
