This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.
Duties
- Contribute to research and development of novel microfluidic-based devices for linear and nonlinear electromagnetic measurements of fluids.
- Evaluate electromagnetic properties of variable composition fluid samples and composite samples at frequencies up to 100 GHz, under variable temperature and pressure.
- Design, construct, and verify electrical and fluid handling systems for broadband electrical measurements of fluids.
- Develop and simulate computational models of hybrid microfluidic-microelectronic devices.
- Analyze measurement results in conjunction with finite-element simulations to identify relevant material parameters of fluids and materials under test.
- Communicate and collaborate with team members, other NIST teams, and external teams.
- Present and publish results as appropriate.

Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
In addition to the basic requirements above, applicants must:
Possess at least 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level (ZP-II at NIST).
Specialized experience is defined as:
- Experience with precision RF and microwave instrumentation and measurements
- Design, simulation, and fabrication of microwave devices and/or circuits
- Data analysis with a modern programming language
- Experience with design, fabrication and measurement of microfluidic devices and circuits.

Master's or equivalent degree

Combination of education and experience
