As a NASA Historian in NASA History Office in the History and Information Services Division, you will work with the NASA Chief Historian to support the function across the agency by researching, evaluating, documenting, and preserving the institutional memory of the agency, aggressively seeking out needed information that is important to the agency's history, and communicating that history to internal and external stakeholders.

Duties

Duties described below are at the highest grade advertised. Duties assigned at lower grade levels will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee. Research and prepare scholarly narratives or documentary histories for publication. Conduct intensive study and critical analysis of source material. Determine accuracy, authenticity, and value of material. Apply specialized knowledge of historiographic research methods. Prepare documents to accompany historical narrative. Respond to requests for information. Research and answer inquiries for historical information for the center, agency, and public. Quickly and accurately synthesize information from sources to express conclusions in a format appropriate to audience. Conduct professional oral history interviews with NASA leadership, employees, and program/project team members as appropriate. Work with local, regional, and Agency level stakeholders to determine and promote the effective use of history in internal decision-making and management, as well as in public communication and outreach. Assist with the planning, organization, and participation in NASA History sponsored symposia, workshops, and conferences. Foster a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence and innovation. Qualifications

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. To qualify for GS-11, you must have: a) One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level Researching historical methodologies and performing scholarly writing or editing in the fields of history or history of science; Assisting with historical research to develop written historical materials for professional publication; and Coordinating, conducting, and finalizing history interviews. OR b) Completed all requirements for a doctoral degree (i.e., Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field OR c) Completed 3 full academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree in an appropriate field. OR d) Have an equivalent combination of experience and graduate study as discussed in a), b) and c) above To qualify for GS-12, you must have: One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level: Researching historical methodologies and performing scholarly writing and editing in the fields of history or history of science; Conducting historical research to develop written historical materials for professional publication; and Developing, conducting, and finalizing history interviews. You must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree.

OR
Have a combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
