Duties
Develop hardware solutions and/or novel data processing methodologies to improve shallow seismic characterization and imaging.
Adapt and develop data processing techniques and algorithms coded in C++, MATLAB, Python, and other common programming languages for active and/or passive seismic event detection.
Conduct applied geophysical research related to electromagnetic induction, electrical resistivity, and other EM geophysical methods.
Conduct studies both independently and as a member of a broader research team.
Present research to technical and non-technical audiences.
Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and technical reports.
Contribute to or develop novel research proposals.
Present research to technical and non-technical audiences.
Conduct applied geophysical research related to near-surface phenomenology to support civil works and military engineering projects and advance Army capabilities.
Conduct research using active and/or passive seismic techniques related to seismic reflection, refraction, surface waves, diffraction, FWI, tomography, DAS, laser Doppler vibrometry, cross-hole, ground penetrating radar (GPR), or seismic monitoring
Requirements

In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. This position is covered by the Science and Technology Laboratory Personnel Management Demonstration Project at the DB-02/04 (equivalent to GS-5/14) grade level. In accordance with the Federal Register Vol. 63, No. 57, dated March 25, 1998, Laboratory Demonstration Project employees must have a current average performance score of at least 2.5 or equivalent (fully successful rating) for promotion consideration.
Management may select at any of the grade levels announced. This recruitment provides promotion opportunity to the target grade of the position without further competition when selectee is eligible and recommended by management. Duties described reflect the full performance DB-04 level. If not selected at the full performance, duties will be performed in a developmental capacity under close supervision.
Qualifications Requirements: To qualify for this position at the DB-02 level, you must meet the Basic Requirements. To qualify at the DB-04 level you must meet the Basic Requirements in addition to required Specialized Experience.
Basic Requirements:
A. Degree: that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).
OR
B. Combination of education and experience - courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Specialized Experience to qualify at the DB-04:
You must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the DB-02 level or higher in Federal service (or private sector equivalent) demonstrating experience and knowledge of the application of the principles, concepts and methodology associated with geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, signal processing and data analytics, mathematics, or physical science applying methods and procedures in routine research, projects or studies; AND experience preparing scientific reports setting forth appropriate data and interpretation.
