Gallery Protection Officer II are armed and commissioned as United States Special Police Officers, have arrest authority, normally serve in uniform and when necessary wear plain clothes in the performance of his/her duties. They serve in various assignments over a period of time, during hours when the National Gallery of Art is open to the public and during non-public non-operating night time hours.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-0085-6. Candidates must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in responsibility to the federal  GS-5 level, as a security officer. Rather, you must show in your résumé how your past work experience demonstrates that you possess the KSAs identified below. If asked to do so, cite specific examples of employment or experience contained in your resume and describe how this experience has prepared you to successfully perform the duties of this position. DO NOT write "see resume" in your application! Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates. Ability to maintain the physical security of a building and its content and visitors. Knowledge of emergency procedures and how to apply them. Skill in communicating with peers, management and the public. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Incumbent is required to qualify annually (at a minimum) with the standard firearm. Failure to re-qualify will result in removal from the position. All applicants appointed to Law Enforcement positions must attend and successfully complete NGA training program. Applicants who fail to successfully meet this requirement will be subject to termination. You must not have a history of domestic violence or child abuse/sexual abuse. You must be able to become Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid qualified and have the ability to read and understand written material in language of the security force. Lautenberg Amendment: This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. A person convicted of a misdemeanor or felony crime of domestic violence is not eligible for the position.  "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Time-in-Grade: Current Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement to receive consideration under merit promotion procedures. CTAP/ICTAP candidates: To be considered "well qualified" you must meet all of the requirements as described in this section. You must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Education

General Experience (for positions at GS-4 and below): Experience such as administrative, technical, clerical, military, or other work that involved following written procedures, rules, or regulations in contacts with coworkers, supervisors, or members of the public to provide a service, respond to inquiries, or obtain information.

Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Experience such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis. For Security Guard positions in a hospital setting, experience as a psychiatric nursing assistant or a similar position safeguarding patients is qualifying.

Education/Training

Education: Successfully completed study at an accredited college or university in any subject is fully qualifying in the amount and level specified in the table.

Training: Successful completion of training in an accredited technical school that covered subjects such as physical security procedures, local laws, or investigative techniques is considered qualifying for specialized experience at the GS-4 level on a month-for-month basis.
