This position is a Survey Technician, GS- 0817-8 working in Hadley, Massachusetts for the Division of Realty.

Duties
As a Survey Technician your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
Serves as Chief Instrument Person and, as assigned, Chief of Party performing varied surveys under conditions requiring deviations from normal practices. Resolves, under non-direct supervision, problems caused by crowded and confined work locations, rugged terrain or interface with project developments.
Researches legal documents at County Courthouses or from other sources. Correlates this research work and crown or state land grants with metes and bounds tract descriptions, deeds, plats and other pertinent data. Checks on surveys for compliance with terms of purchase agreement.
Collects and assembles all data relative to the property survey to expedite field and office work. Reviews contractual survey work for accuracy, completeness and acceptability. Performs preliminary computation work for the determination of property lines, acreage and other associated computations for the preparation of the survey report. Completes drafting or advises on the drafting of cadastral plats and prepares the preliminary legal description.
Checks maps to determine that the topography is properly represented and makes all necessary corrections. Maps new areas as required. Operates electronic/robotic total stations to measure angles and horizontal and vertical distances.

Qualifications
Only experience and education obtained by 05/09/2024 will be considered.
In order to qualify for this position, you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.
Basic Requirement:
Specialized experience is technical work which provided the knowledge and skills needed for work in the type of surveying involved. It must have required the use of the pertinent instruments and techniques of surveying. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, work as an engineering technician, soil conservation technician, or construction inspector. NOTE: Your resume must document this experience.
Minimum Qualification [GS-8]
I possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-7) in the Federal service that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience may include: 1) Conducting topographic and cadastral land survey work using a variety of surveying equipment; 2) Performing a variety of survey computations using knowledge of mathematics; 3) Performing data entry and survey computations using software such as Autodesk Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, Starnet, Topcon Magnet office, ArcGIS or similar; 4) Operating and maintaining survey levels, total stations, and GNSS receivers; 5) researching, writing, and interpreting legal property descriptions. NOTE: Your resume must contain sufficient detail, e.g., complete begin/end dates, hours worked per week, duties performed, etc. for each timeframe for consideration.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
