This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties

Install and repair new and existing high-pressure piping systems such as steam heating, steam generation, hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, circulating pumps and radiators Install, modify and repair pipes for systems such as sewage, water, oil, gas distribution water closets, tubs, backflow prevention devices/assemblies, fire sprinkler and showers Weld copper joints and steam lines Operate drain and sewer cleaning machinery Operate heavy hand tools and power equipment Recognize developing vehicular maintenance problems when conducting operator inspections Locate and tap main lines, set up system routes, place and cut openings Determine tools, parts, equipment and supplies needed, including proper types, sizes and materials Improvise installations when blueprints and sketches do not provide sufficient information

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent to complete a pre-employment and annual physical examination.
  • This position will require a valid state driver’s license.
  • This position is Mission Essential.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a two year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain Backflow certification for the state of Maryland within 6 months of onboarding.

Qualifications

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic (MVO) ~ without more than normal supervision installing, modifying and repairing new and existing high-pressure piping systems. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Employee frequently works from stands and other hard-to-reach places. Must stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, stretch and work in awkward and cramped positions when welding in hard-to-reach or confined spaces. Frequently handles objects weighing up to 45 pounds and over 45 pounds with assistance. May be required to exert very heavy physical effort, lifting and carrying heavy objects weighing over 50 pounds (23 kilograms); operating power equipment and tools. WORKING CONDITIONS: Employee works both inside and outside, sometimes in bad weather, in hard to reach places, and in areas that are noisy, dirty, greasy, smoky, exposed to temperature extremes, drafts, dust and dirt. Worker may be exposed to fumes, heat, flying sparks, the glare of torches and heated materials; possibility of eye injury, electric shock, broken bones and the chance of cuts when working with sharp objects. There may be discomfort when wearing protective clothing, safety shoes, gloves and flash shield or eye goggles and other equipment as required. Work requires the employee to follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment.
